#1 Summer Fun, Summer Not: Aired Wednesday, August 21, 1996

Charlie and Kirsten are back together, but without wedding plans. Griffin is back in town. Claudia fell in love at summer camp. Bailey and Will have a disastrous road trip to Mexico.

#2 Going, Going, Gone: Aired Wednesday, August 28, 1996

Kirsten gets a job teaching at Cal State Monterey and the commute begins to take its toll on her relationship with Charlie. Griffin, temporarily living on the Salinger's floor while looking for an apartment, doesn't measure up to Julia's expectations of responsibility. Claudia becomes angry at Julia when her boyfriend develops a crush on her. Bailey has trouble when Will leaves for college with his newest best buddy and roommate, Tucker.

#3 Short Cuts: Aired Wednesday, September 4, 1996

Bailey starts college and makes a new friend who is a bad influence. Julia and Justin both enter and essay contest. Kirsten's professor discovers that she has plagiarized part of her dissertation.

#4 Deal With It: Aired Wednesday, September 11, 1996

Bailey's new college friend, Cooper, and Julia are attracted to each other, but Bailey forbids them to date. Bailey moves into an apartment but Sarah doesn't like his new female roommate. Claudia takes on the household repairs herself. Charlie realizes that Kirsten's depressed state is much more serious than he thought.

#5 Mixed Signals: Aired Wednesday, September 18, 1996

Bailey finds himself playing rescuer for his new roommate, Callie, who has gotten herself in over her head with a slew of boyfriends. Cooper wants his relationship with Julia to become a sexual one, but Julia isn't ready. Claudia's best friend, Jody, confides in Claudia that her mother's new boyfriend made sexual advances towards her. When Kirsten tries a new medication she becomes compulsive about neatness.

#6 Going Home: Aired Wednesday, September 25, 1996

Bailey gets closer to Callie. Julia and Sarah go to the east coast for college interviews, but Sarah gets homesick. Charlie is furious at Claudia when Kirsten's parents arrive threatening to take her back to Chicago.

#7 Personal Demons: Aired Wednesday, October 30, 1996

It is Halloween and Claudia is convinced that a curse is the cause of all the bad things that have happened to the family, and so she hires an exorcist to cleanse the family dwelling. Bailey is beginning to feel the constraints of his celibate relationship with Sarah. Julia has to deal with the fact that Justin is beginning to date other people. Charlie puts his trust in a man who claims to be an old friend of his father's, and meets a new woman who runs a local charity which feeds the homeless.

#8 Not So Fast: Aired Wednesday, November 6, 1996

Bailey sleeps with Callie and realizes something must be missing from his relationship with Sarah. Julia receives a scathing critique of her writing. Claudia meets Avery, and old musician friend of her mother's, who wants to enroll her in a music conservatory school.

#9 Gimme Shelter: Aired Wednesday, November 13, 1996

The press paints Charlie as the bad guy when he mishandles an incident with the homeless, and so does Grace. Bailey opts for Plan C after he's rejected by the hockey team. Julia begins to befriend the guys working on the roof. Claudia goes through a rebellious stage.

#10 Close to You (Originally: Friends & Lovers): Aired Wednesday, November 20, 1996

Bailey rescues Callie from a near date-rape. She becomes more dependent on him, and he breaks a date with Sarah to stay with her. Julia's attraction grows for Sam, one of the construction workers fixing the roof. Claudia writes an "Advice to the Lovelorn" column for her school newspaper and begins to analyze everyone's problems. Charlie finds himself in an awkward position when Grace wants to be more than friends.

#11 I Do: Aired Wednesday, November 27, 1996

Bailey is on a downward spiral, sowing his long lost wild oats in college and getting closer to Callie. Charlie is feeling a continued attraction to Grace as Joe sweeps into town announcing he is getting married and wants to do it at the restaurant. Julia confesses her infatuations to Sarah.

#12 Desperate Measures: Aired Wednesday, December 11, 1996

Charlie flies to Chicago to see Kirsten and is surprised to see her doing and looking so good. But he soon realizes that her illness is something that can't be easily fixed. Claudia has appendicitis. Bailey tells Sarah about Callie.

#13 Christmas: Aired Wednesday, December 18, 1996

Grandpa Jake returns for the holidays with news that he is sick. Charlie throws himself into work, and ends up befriending a mentally ill homeless man. Alone for the holidays since Callie has left to see her own family and Sarah has gone with her parents, Bailey bonds with his wrestling coach. Claudia is trying to convince a boy that she doesn't like him, but her plan backfires.

#14 Life's Too Short: Aired Wednesday, January 8, 1997

Julia's friend Libby commits suicide. Charlie attends his high school reunion and begins to think that the best time of his life is behind him. Sarah dumps Bailey.

#15 Significant Others: Aired Wednesday, January 15, 1997

Bailey throws himself into his wrestling competition... and the after-match drinking celebrations. Grace goes out on a date with another guy and Charlie gets jealous. Sam becomes more attentive to Julia after encountering his old girlfriend.

#16 I Declare: Aired Wednesday, January 22, 1997

Charlie and Grace finally start dating, and have trouble taking things slow. Julia gets into Stanford, but isn't sure if she wants to go, which make Sarah bitter because she didn't even get in. Bailey is failing a class. Claudia outs Ross's new boyfriend who is a teacher at her school.

#17 Misery Loves Company: Aired Wednesday, January 29, 1997

Will comes to visit and is worried that Bailey has a drinking problem. Grace moves into the Salingers' house after a fire destroys her apartment. Julia decides she can no longer live under Charlie's rule, and moves into Sam's apartment.

#18 M.Y.O.B.: Aired Wednesday, February 5, 1997

Grace isn't sure she likes her new neighborhood. Claudia tries to get closer to Grace by volunteering in her office. Julia and Sarah are both worried about Bailey. Bailey, having spent all his money on alcohol, is short on rent money.

#19 Point of No Return: Aired Wednesday, February 12, 1997

Bailey's siblings finally realize the enormity of his drinking problem after he shows up drunk to Owen's birthday party. Grace is unsettled by a surprise visit from her parents, but Charlie likes them. Julia dumps Sam after realizing that he is racist.

#20 Intervention: Aired Wednesday, February 19, 1997

Grace and Sarah join the Salingers for a family intervention to confront Bailey about his drinking. Bailey is so stung by everyone's accusations that he goes on the attack, slinging cruel comments of his own. Joe joins in at the end an reveals that Nick, the Salingers' father, was also an alcoholic.

#21 Hitting Bottom: Aired Wednesday, February 26, 1997

Bailey is still drinking, and alienates both Callie and Coach Petrocelli. He ends up crashing his car while driving drunk and injuring Sarah. Claudia directs her anger toward her late father. Griffin returns when Julia needs him most.

#22 Leap of Faith: Aired Wednesday, March 5, 1997

Bailey goes to AA and sees Walter Alcott, the man who killed his parents, there. Griffin is trying to figure out how to spend his lawsuit settlement money. Julia convinces him to go see his father. Grace is approached to run for a local elected office.

#23 Promises, Promises: Aired Wednesday, March 19, 1997

Sarah tries to move on by dating an attractive medical student, but her efforts to remain supportive for Bailey are met with dissaproval from Callie. Elsewhere, Claudia schemes to prove that Grace is too self absorbed to care about the family. Griffin voices his concern over Julia slacking off in school after she skips school to be with him.

#24 A Little Faith: Aired Wednesday, March 26, 1997

Sarah goes away with her parents for spring break and Bailey volunteers to chaperone Claudia on a trip to Los Angeles in order to distract himself in her absence. Julia and Griffin decide to take a motorcycle trip, but when the bike breaks down and he decides to buy the shop where it gets fixed, Julia has to come to terms with the fact that she is suddenly the footloose one in the relationship. Grace has a pregnancy scare, which although false, brings up the whole issue of kids with Charlie. It turns out they feel very differently on the subject.

#25 You Win Some, You Lose Some: Aired Wednesday, April 2, 1997

Bailey tries to make amends to all the people he hurt while he was drinking. Sarah still just wants to be friends. Griffin and Julia get married so that he will feel okay about her going to Europe with Justin. Charlie realizes that although he loves Grace, she can never love his kids like Kirsten did, and like any good parent, he has to put the kids first.
