Owen finds Charlie the perfect woman in the grocery store, but Charlie keeps getting mysteriously sick every time he goes out on a date with her. Claudia practically knocks herself out to please Reed. Julia's co-worker thinks she's sending mixed signals and kisses her. Bailey and Sarah plot against the woman in apartment 14 until Bailey finds her at an AA meeting.

Bailey and Annie begin to bond over their mutual addictions. Julia's on-the-job troubles start to get worse as Griffin finally comes to the realization that something is wrong. Just as Charlie and Nina's relationship begins to progress, the two begin to argue over different philosophies of life.

Griffin feels like Charlie hates him, and follows Julia's advice to try to get to know her brother better. Claudia pines after the oblivious Reed who asks a different younger girl out on a date. Charlie sees Kirsten again and finally gains some closure from his relationship with her. Charlie tells Nina he loves her. Bailey and Annie start to pursue their new relationship, but call it quits when Bailey's sponsor disapproves.

When Charlie collapses on the racquetball court, he confides in Kirsten, but tells no one what happened. Not wanting to tell Julia the extent of his financial problems, Griffin is forced to borrow a large sum of money from a business associate. Sarah decides it is time to lose her virginity, but isn't able to go through with her decision. Bailey, shocked by Sarah's decision, falls into bed with Annie.

Charlie tells Nina that he's sick, and although she tries to put on a brave face, he realizes that she can't handle the news. Just before they renew their vows, Julia finds out about the financial troubles that Griffin has been hiding. Bailey makes a last minute decision to bring Annie, and therefore Natalie, to the wedding, and Natalie causes disaster after disaster.

Julia gets a wake up call from Sarah and finally realizes that she has to get a real job. Bailey, unable to do anything for Charlie, misdirects his frustration towards Annie. Claudia is furious with Julia and Griffin because they decide to save money by firing Reed.

Christmastime finds Sarah and Bailey hosting a tree-trimming party, and Charlie accompanying Kirsten on a long-distance trip. The holidays also bring homecomings for Will, who discovers that he and Bailey live in two different worlds; and Justin, whose rosy tales of Ivy League life prompt Julia to paint a rosy picture of her own.

Unable to function, Charlie asks for help at home and at the restaurant. Bailey successfully manages the restaurant, but finds he has to fire Julia because of her poor performance as a waitress. Julia, meanwhile, is not having an easier time running the household, or Claudia, who finally discovers that Reed does not share her feelings of love. Charlie, who is having trouble just eating and sleeping, rediscovers his love for design through Sarah's project for theater class.

Julia and Griffin's relationship takes a turn for the worse when she dumps more of the household duties onto him and his money problems deepen. Bailey and Annie, tired of trying to hide from Natalie, decided to tell Natalie the truth about their relationship. Natalie doesn't take it so well. Claudia continues to deceive herself into believing that Reed is her boyfriend until he is brutally honest with her. Charlie decides to try out alternative medicine when he gets a persistent rash.

Julia bonds with a woman named Jeanie at her new temp job over their troubled marriages, but is disheartened when Jeanie ends up leaving her husband. Griffin and Julia make a commercial for the motorcycle shop's grand re-opening, but finally realize that they can't sink any more money into the failing business. Charlie is at first ecstatic when he learns that his cancer buddy Kevin is in complete remission, but is then overcome by an overwhelming feeling that Kevin's recovery has just made his own chances for recovery that much smaller. Elliot finally admits that he's gay, convincing Sarah that she is going die a virgin. Claudia writes an essay for a school time capsule.

Charlie finds himself hospitalized after coming down with a bad case of pneumonia. Although he recovers, he decides it's time to write a will. Kirsten's husband Paul become jealous when Kirsten cancels their vacation and spends all her time visiting Charlie. Bailey decides to drop out of school. Claudia completely stops going to school, but also avoids visiting Charlie in the hospital. Griffin ends up having to sell the shop to and take a job from the man who ran him out of business.

#17 Of Sound Mind and Body: Aired Wednesday, February 11, 1998

Claudia continues to skip class until her guidance counselor calls a family meeting. When the only member of the family who shows up is Claudia, her school calls Child Services, who places Claudia and Owen with Kirsten until they can determine whether the elder Salingers are really capable of taking care of them. Griffin drifts farther and farther away from Julia as she has less and less time for him. Rosalie makes a move on Griffin which he rebuffs. Charlie wants to give Claudia and Owen to Kirsten in his will, but her husband doesn't want kids, and Julia talks Charlie into giving them to her and Griffin after she convices Child Services that they are the solid parental couple.

Bailey discovers Annie's relapse on the anniversary of her sobriety; and Julia rediscovers the academic world in a college literature class, while Griffin discovers he can no longer fight his growing attraction to Rosalie. Meanwhile, Claudia gets help from a psychologist.

Charlie, Bailey, and Julia decide to visit their long dormant family cabin up in the Sierras for a couple of days rest and relaxation. Bailey discovers that Annie left and had to be forced into a rehab clinic. Julia confronts an unsuspecting Griffin about Rosalie. Charlie finally realizes how much his parents death has affected the outcome of his life. He tells Julia and Bailey how scared he is of dying and they each in turn admit their own fears of losing him. Claudia has been secretly sending away for boarding school applications, figuring no one really wants her around anyway.

Charlie tries to have a celebratory party now that he's in remission, but every time he chooses a date, someone can't make it. He meets a stripper named Daphne who was a gift for the non-existant party from his old cancer buddy Kevin. Daphne convinces him that he needs to live his life differently after his near-death experience. She also reminds him that having sex is just like riding a bicycle.... Griffin finally admits his adultery to Julia and they go to see a marriage counselor. Julia announces her decision to go to college. Sarah realizes she still has feeling for Bailey as they care for Annie's daughter together. When Joe says he's getting ready to sell his share of the restaurant, the family decides to buy him out when Bailey expresses his desire to manage it.

Charlie stars in Daphne's benefit musical. Claudia finds Jamie to be a little overwhelming. Julia gets no help from Justin in her fight to save her marriage. Annie and Bailey use Sarah as a sounding board about each other until she sits them down and insists that they talk to each other.

Charlie is bothered by Daphne's stripping, which leads her to clearly define the casual terms of their relationship... right before admitting that she's pregnant. Griffin wins a free trip to Los Angeles by being the 1,000th customer at a supermarket, and he and Julia manage to inject some fun and love back into their relationship by pretending to be foreign strangers meeting at their hotel. Bailey is threatened when Sarah finds a male roommate to replace him and Annie's ex-husband shows up wanting his family back. Claudia is incredibly excited when Jamie asks her to his prom.

#24 Fools Rush Out: Aired Wednesday, May 13, 1998

Annie decides to leave town with Jay, and Sarah gets up the nerve to tell Bailey she loves him. They reunite and Sarah finally loses her virginity. Charlie asks Daphne to have the baby and says that he will take full responsibility for the child if he has to. Griffin decides it's best that he and Julia separate after he feels like he's holding her back from a normal college life when she gets accepted to Stanford. Jamie takes Claudia to the prom on the wrong week and they end up dancing in a playing field by themselves.
